Profile

Tony James has collected banknotes since 1983, specialising in military and emergency paper currency.

He wrote for the Australian Coin Review magazine from 1990 to 1997, and continues to write for the Australian Coin and Banknote Magazine in his column ‘Noteworld’ and other articles which have also been published in Banknote Reporter, Coin and Medal News and the Journal of the IBNS. He maintains that every note and coin has a story to tell, and has written over 300 articles on numismatics.

Tony entered the numismatic industry in 1997 after a long banking career and has helped collectors put together some of the top collections in Australia. He has attended many of the major coin fairs in Australia and overseas and has taken part in three ANA summer schools in the US. In 2011, he commenced dealing independently as Tony James Noteworld.

He has been a member of the International Bank Note Society since 1985, and secretary of the Sydney Chapter of the IBNS for many years. He is presently director for Region 6, having previously served as a director on the Board of the IBNS for three terms and has attended all but one of the Australian conventions.

In 2013 he was honoured by the Australian Institute of History and Arts for his contribution in his field for  preserving Australia’s nation heritage.  He was declared a Fellow of the Institute in recognition of his leadership, his knowledge and his understanding of the historical importance of numismatics, particularly banknotes. His citation read: “By his efforts in this specialized field Tony has succeeded by private initiative in acquiring a greater knowledge of this subject than could ever be obtained by anyone using the normal scholarly channels or established houses of learning. Future generations of Australians will forever be appreciative of this work, which has greatly enriched the archives of our country.”
